As a general rule, today’s PPCs tend to target the business user. As such, PDA’s usually have a rather brick’ish look about them, and therefore have, with few exceptions, stayed there. The recent notable devices that have a rather stylish look about them include the I-mate Smartflip, Blackberry ‘Pearl’, and most notable the HTC P3300, based on the Artemis platform. And, while its sleek form factor, gunmetal grey coloring, and lightweight footprint are certainly nothing to sneeze at, the P3300 brings more to the table than simply looks, including some unique technologies (at least for a PDA).

Chief among the interesting features of the P3300 are its unique trackball/jog-wheel system. The jog wheel, new to PPC’s, is an interesting addition, allowing you to rapidly navigate emails, menus, and web pages. The trackball on the unit functions in two completely different modes. The default mode simply allows the user to scroll through menus etc., in much the same way as the wheel. The other mode, called ‘mouse mode’, actually adds a cursor to the screen, and allows the user to navigate the screen, and click on any object by depressing the ball.

Although only sporting a 200Mhz processor, the Artemis performed well at the majority of tasks. Accessing contacts, scrolling through emails, running 3rd party applications were easy and quick, with no stalling or freezing. And, the EDGE-enabled internet access was satisfactory for basic web-browsing and email retrieval.

As a phone, the P3300 is an above average PPC phone. Call quality is excellent, with parties on the receiving end hearing me neither especially clear nor particularly fuzzy. Dialing is very simple through the Pocket PC dial-pad interface, or via the built-in voice command software. Scrolling through a large number of contacts is quick and easy using the jog-wheel system.

The HTC P3300 comes with Bluetooth 1.2, with the A2DP support for streaming stereo sound to your headset. Although pairing the P3300 with headsets is quite easy, and bluetooth voice calls sound clear and crisp.

One of the best features of the Artemis is the integrated GPS. With a built in GPS Sirf-Star III chipset, navigation was seamless. The unit comes bundled with TomTom 6, and included in your purchase is the ability to download one free city-map. Additionally, there is an external antenna port on the back of the unit which enables you to achieve better satellite reception.

The camera has a 2MP resolution, and boasts HTC’s new camera UI (introduced on the TyTN), with more options than ever before. Pictures came out clean and clear, and taking videos was a snap. While the integrated camera will not replace your Nikon, it sure is handy, and actually quite effective.

The HTC P3300 is an excellent product. While not for everybody, it really combines many desired features in one simple and elegant device. For many people, a keyboard or a faster processor is a necessity, and this device will not fit the bill. However, for those of us who are tired of lugging around chargers, cables, GPS kits, bluetooth mice, or an oversized PDA Phone, the HTC P3300 is just excellent product!

Built by HTC and originally named the Herald this is the HTC P4350. The device is notably thin and is a quad-band PDA phone that comes in a slim and compact package but gives you everything you need for a mobile device.

Armed with a full QWERTY keyboard that easily slides out, entering information has never been faster and easier. The large 2.8″ screen gives you enough room to read files and browse the Web comfortably. An expansion is possible via a MicroSD slot. Speaking about the display, it is similar to most screens found on the majority of recently-released Windows Mobile-communicators. The matrix supports a resolution of 320×240 pixels (QVGA) and capable of 65 K colors, measures 2.8 diagonally, which is almost an all-time (at least for now) standard for this type of devices. Similarly to HTC Wizard there are four levels of backlighting available.

The displays behavior in the sun is perfect it fades but still allows for reading information without any problems. Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0 with Direct Push technology lets you get updates to your e-mail, tasks and contacts immediately. With GPRS/EDGE, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.0, you stay connected at any time, any place.

The model houses a 2 Mpix CMOS-powered camera module. Unlike HTC Prophet (Qtek S200), here you wont find macro-mode, as well as auto-focus and flash. Even though the snaps taken with the P4350 dont break the ground, they appear to be quite good quality-wise. One of the most positive changes is enhanced color rendering, so that from now on bright areas on pictures dont get filled with white only. In daylight, one can snap really nice-looking shots.

Keep yourself entertained by playing back music and video using Windows Media Player. Physical connectivity is provided by HTC’s USB implementation, ExtUSB, which supports audio in addition to data transfers. The communicator handles four GSM bands and has EDGE class B, multi-slot class 10 onboard.

The HTC P4350 – your mobile office and entertainment center in one. The P4350 is a slim device with a great keypad which is easy and comfortable to use. You’ll find your self jotting down fairly “simple” Word documents on this and then – when you email it to your boss – it’s a lot more detailed and longer than you thought purely because the keyboard is such a joy to use.

The HTC P4350 is a great all-round package. It’s small enough to feel like a phone and flexible enough to do most laptop tasks. If you go out and forget your laptop you’ll never need to worry if you’ve got this in your pocket. Your boss will think you’re at work, your friends will think it’s a cool phone and you’ll have a practical, versatile device for every day use.The communicator runs on Windows Mobile 5.0 powered by AKU 3.2 update pack. An in-depth review on Windows Mobile 5.0 can be found in a dedicated article on our portal, so that we are free to dwell on pre-installed applications instead.

The communicator supports all methods of data input you can think of the hardware QWERTY keyboard, virtual thumbboard and hand-written text recognition. However the Phone pad is missing an additional way of input, which is an on-screen numeric keypad. The heart of the Herald is Texas Instruments OMAP 850 CPU whose frequency tops out at 200 MHz. Depending on current load level, CPUs frequency gets adjusted to the needs of the system automatically. Volume of RAM makes 64 Mb, where 44.01 Mb can be managed by user, plus flash-memory (intended for storing users data) 42.55 Mb (out of 128 Mb). The RAM volume is quite enough for stable operation; by plugging in a microSD card, amount of bundled flash-memory becomes significant.

If youre after a smart, easy-to-use and Internet-friendly smartphone, then look no further than the HTC S310.The HTC S310 is ideal for your everyday personal use and great for your day-to-day business needs. S310 Windows Mobile Smartphone is designed to appeal to those who want functions but not fancy features. As a Quad-band handset there is no denying its international capability, and it is small and light at 108 x 47 x 18.5mm and 106g. It is nicely designed too, in as far as it has large number buttons and a rubbery material used for much of the casing, so that it is easy to hold and to dial. With a 2-inch LCD display and stylish, compact design, the HTC S310 provides extensive features for work and play. Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0 Direct Push keeps you always up to date with your e-mails as well as contacts, calendar appointments, and tasks. Document viewers on the device allow you to read Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and PDF files. Wirelessly browse the Internet using Internet Explorer Mobile and the device’s GSM, GPRS or EDGE connection. The HTC S310 also keeps you entertained with music and video on the go. Phone has 176 x 220 pixel resolution display. There is, of course, a 1.3-megapixels camera. The Bluetooth version supports wireless stereo output, so you can send tunes to a suitably-equipped headset, which might be enough to entice you to consider using the S310 as a mobile music machine. If you do have plans in this direction, though, you are going to need to invest in a miniSD card immediately in order to carry your music around, as device has just 11.5MB.About half of the front fascia is occupied by the screen, with the remainder given over to two button banks. The bottom one is the numberpad and HTC has done a good job with this, making it as big as it can possibly be and shaping the keys so that they can be felt independently of each other. Above this is a large navigation pad which is slightly raised from its surroundings so that it is easy to locate and use. To its left and right are smaller buttons for accessing the Windows Mobile Smartphone softmenus, the Today screen and stepping back. The call and end keys are on the far outside edges. They are larger than you might expect, because they are built into the overall design. This is a simple but clever feature which makes them easy to find and hit. Side buttons are minimal with the left edge just housing a pair of volume control buttons. These double up so that on long presses they activate the Windows Mobile voice recorder and voice tag feature. This latter is Windows Mobiles effort at voice control. With it you start voice calls and emails or go to Web pages that are stored in the device Contacts software, and run applications, but you need to train it for each instance by creating a voice tag. On the right edge is another pair of buttons. One of these launches the camera and then captures images while the other has long and short press features. On a long press it acts as the power switch and with a short press it opens the QuickList. This is a feature of Windows Mobile Smartphone that lets you switch profiles and access the phones Comm Manager for controlling wireless communications.

The HTC TyTN is a Windows Mobile 5.0 smartphone with 3G and 3.5G support, WiFi and a pull-out QWERTY keyboard. The TyTN follows a now-familiar design that we’ve seen in other HTC devices, with a 240×320 pixel 2.8″ touch-sensitive display that flips between lansdcape (wide) and portrait (tall) modes. There’s also a 2 megapixel camera, 64Mb of internal memory with microSD expansion and WiFi support. The processor is a 400MHz Samsung unit. HTC say that the TyTN is HSDPA enabled, so presumably it should work with 3.5G out of the box. It also supports tri-band UMTS 850/1900/2100 MHz plus GSM 850/900/1800/1900 MHz with GPRS and EDGE. Add to that 802.11b and 802.11g wireless ethernet, and the HTC TyTN is easily the best connected device we’ve ever seen. (850 and 1900 MHz UMTS networks are being rolled out in North America).Windows Mobile 5.0 comes with the usual array of applications to work with the internet and Microsoft Office documents, plus Windows Media Player. It also supports Microsoft’s Push Email solution. The TyTN supports video calling, voice dialling and has a built-in handsfree speakerphone function. Of course, you’ll probably want to use a Bluetooth headset rather hold the 176 gram TyTN to your ear every time you want to make a call.Talktime is up to 5 hours on GSM (with the screen off) or a maximum of 4 hours on UMTS. Standby time is up to 10 days, with around 8-12 hours of media playback. Of course, these are maximum times and 3G, Bluetooth, WiFi and the large screen will tend to drain power more quickly.

The JAQ contains the same 200 MHz Texas Instruments processor that’s so popular in HTC’s devices. It produces acceptable performance for basic usage. Based on Windows Mobile 5 with AKU 2.5, the JAQ includes a moderate amount of non-standard. ClearVue PDF is also onboard if you need to view PDFs. With the QWERTY keyboard, the Jaq lends itself to be a powerful e-mail machine. Outlook Mobile comes with the Jaq as part of the Office Mobile Suite, and it supports push e-mail via Microsoft’s Messaging and Security Feature Pack. I-mate includes its own e-mail client, which you can set up via the phone’s Club I-mate e-mail app. It also supports instant, text, and multimedia messaging. There are a couple of extra utilities and PIM tools, such as a calculator, a download agent customizations. Most of these are centered around i-mate’s remote management systems: the ability to push data, files, even full applications onto the device remotely from the home office. This is no doubt a tremendous boon for IT departments who need to be able to manage field workers, though it’s less relevant to smaller businesses and individuals, neither of which would probably be investing in i-mate’s software suite. The JAQ’s single miniSD slot allows for up to 2 GB of memory, or potentially a MiniSD W-Fi card. For docking, the JAQ has one mini-USB port, and that’s it. Simultaneous data and charging are accomplished by way of a small splitter cable included in the box that allows you to connect both the USB-tipped power supply and a sync cable. The JAQ also has an external RF connector, suitable for hooking it up to a cellular antenna or amplifier. With a larger than average 1440 mAh battery, the JAQ has quite good battery life, enough that even the most hard-core of business users should be able to get through the day on a single battery. i-mate rates the device for four hours of talk time, but in reality it provides more like eight. This varies depending on signal and usage, of course, but unless you’re connected to the Internet every minute of the day, there should be no question about the JAQ managing a full work schedule. The keyboard is by far the best part of the i-mate JAQ. Flat keys of a decent size, not too hard, with a very solid and responsive click when pressed. On the left spine, there are Volume Up and Down keys and a Voice Record button, while the power button, the Mini SD card slot, and the 2.5mm headset jack are on the right side. A mini USB port sits on the bottom of the device along with the reset hole and stylus holder. The I-mate Jaq is a quad-band phone, so globetrotting execs will be able to use the mobile overseas. The address book is limited only by the available memory and is quite robust. You can store up to 11 numbers for a single entry as well as home and work addresses, e-mail, IM screen name, birthday, spouse’s name, and more. You can organize contacts into groups, and for caller ID purposes, you can pair them with a photo and one of eight polyphonic ring tones. Wireless options are limited to infrared and Bluetooth 1.2
