One of the first HTC handsets to be retailed under HTC’s own brand, the HTC MTeoR is a conventional looking Windows Mobile 5.0 smartphone. It comes with a 2.2″ 240×320 pixel display, 1.3 megapixel camera, microSD memory expansion and Bluetooth. It’s a 3G device, and unusually the HTC MTeoR is a tri-band UMTS phone (850/1900/2100 MHz) as well as a quad-band GSM handset with EDGE and GPRS data. This means that the MTeoR can work on the upcoming UMTS 850/1900 networks in North America in addition to the standard UMTS 2100 used elsewhere in the world. Windows Mobile 5.0 is pretty familiar now, with Internet Explorer, plus an email client and Microsoft Office view. Windows Media Player is a strong point in this particular OS, and it gives the MTeoR strong multimedia credentials. There’s push email support too, presumably using Microsoft’s extensions to Exchange. It’s a fairly compact device, weighing 120 grams and measuring 112×49x15mm - not bad for a Windows smartphone. Internal memory is 64Mb, and the internal processor is a 300MHz Samsung ARM-based processor. It’s an evolutionary design rather than a revolutionary one - you can see that it’s pretty closely related to the HTC Tornado / O2 XDA iQ for example. It also seems to lack stereo Bluetooth and the 1.3 megapixel camera is looking a little dated these days. And unlike the Tornado, the MTeoR doesn’t support WiFi. Still, it’s a very promising looking device and it’s a good deal easier to carry around than a PDA-style smartphone.
